House Energy and Commerce Holds Hearing on TCPA Modernization

On Thursday, September 22, 2016, the House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee held a hearing on “Modernizing the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.”  Members of the committee asked witnesses how they would reform TCPA to ensure consumers receive informational communications while eliminating unwanted robocalls.  Members also inquired as to any required technological changes.

In preparation for the hearing, CBA sent a joint Statement for the Record to the Committee advocating for common sense reforms to the TCPA to bring it into the twenty-first century.  The letter highlighted concerns that compliance-minded companies, such as financial institutions, are prevented from sending informational communications to their customers due to the threat of TCPA litigation by the aggressive Plaintiffs’ Bar.
