CBA Announces New Leadership for 2016

Citi’s Will Howle Becomes Chair, Ross Carey of U.S. Bank Named Chair-Elect

Washington, D.C. - The Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) is pleased to announce Will Howle, Head of U.S. Retail Banking for Citigroup Inc., as Chairman of the Board of Directors, leading CBA’s newly elected leadership for 2016. Howle previously had been serving as Chair-Elect of the Board.  In addition, Ross Carey, Executive Vice President, Division Manager of U.S. Bank, has been named Chair-Elect. 

“CBA has grown tremendously under Tim Wennes and Richard Hunt’s leadership, serving as an increasingly effective supporter and advocate of the retail banking industry,” said Howle.  “I look forward to working with Tim, Richard, Ross, the Board and the entire organization to help build on that success and focus on the many important issues facing our business and customers today and tomorrow.”

Howle succeeds Tim Wennes, West Coast President, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Markets at MUFG Union Bank.  Wennes, who has also served as CBA’s Membership Council Chairman, will remain on the Board as Immediate Past Chair.  Howle, Carey and Wennes will comprise CBA’s Administrative Committee, which is charged with oversight of CBA’s operations.

CBA membership also approved two new members to the Board.  Joining the Board are David Tyrie—Bank of America and Dennis Devine—Key Community Bank.  CBA's 24-member board of senior retail banking executives guides the organization in its support of and advocacy for the retail banking industry, which provides banking services to America’s consumers and small businesses.  In addition, Christopher McComish—BMO Harris and Thong Nguyen—Bank of America will be rotating off the board, and John Owen—Regions will take over as Chair of the Government Relations Council.

About Will Howle:  William Howle assumed the role of President of U.S. Retail Banking at Citi in April, 2014. Under Howle’s leadership, U.S. retail Banking offers a full range of consumer banking needs, including checking and savings accounts, loans and wealth management services – all through a world-class network of physical branches and digital channels, as well as the Citi Personal Wealth Management business.  He also oversees Citi Small Business.

Previously, Howle was the President of Citi Commercial Bank in the U.S. He served concurrently as Chief Operating Officer of U.S. Consumer and Commercial Banking at Citi.

Howle has more than 25 years of experience in banking, including commercial and small business banking, deposit services, trust services and wealth management.  Prior to joining Citi in December of 2010, Howle was a Managing Director and Head of Sales for Morgan Stanley’s Private Bank, where he led a National Sales Team that supported 18,000 Financial Advisors.  Previously, he was at Wachovia, originally starting its Private Advisory Group, a team of dedicated bankers who were focused on offering investment and banking strategies to affluent clients, later leading various business units, and eventually serving as Chief Operating Officer of Wachovia’s Retail and Small Business Bank as an Executive Vice President. Howle began his career at Bank of America, working in its Commercial Banking group before running its Wealth Management Business in South Carolina and Georgia.

Howle graduated from Appalachian State University in 1988 with a BSBA.

About Ross Carey: Ross Carey has been with U.S. Bank for 24 years.  As Executive Vice President, he has responsibility for over 580 U.S. Bank branches and all small business banking personnel in the metropolitan areas of San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area in California, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Reno.  Before being named E.V.P. in July, 2006, he was Region President in charge of the Oregon Valley Coast Community Banking Region.  He has also served U.S. Bank in California as a Region Manager.

Carey has served on the Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) Board and as Chair of the Government Relations Council.  He is active in his community with service in Salem through his work with the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce as Past President.  He is also the Past President of Family Building Blocks, a relief nursery, and on the Board as past Chair of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon.           

Carey attended the University of Oregon and holds a Bachelor of Social Science Degree.  Carey has been married to his wife, Suzanne, for 22 years and they have two children: Theresa (age 21), and Joseph (age 17).

About Dennis Devine:  Dennis Devine is a Co-President of Key Community Bank.  He is responsible for Key’s Consumer and Business Banking lines of business nationally.  He is also a member of KeyCorp’s Executive Council and Executive Leadership Team.

Since joining Key in 2012, Devine has shaped the bank’s client-centric, go-to-market Consumer & Business Banking strategy. Under his leadership, Consumer and Business Banking teams are executing simplified, clear priorities to help our clients make confident decisions and benefit from Key’s expanded product set. At the same time, Devine has enhanced how we engage our clients with rapid adoption, sales growth, and innovation across our online/mobile, branch, contact center, and ATM channels.

Prior to joining Key, Devine served as Group Executive Vice President and Director of U.S. Distribution at Citizens Financial Group. In this role, he was responsible for business performance and management of all customer-facing channels across the 12-state Citizens franchise. His teams included 1,400 retail branches, business banking, wealth management, online and mobile banking, telephone contact centers, the ATM network, external partnership management and distribution support.

Previously, Devine was at PNC Bank where he held senior leadership roles in Retail and Business Banking, as well as serving as Chief Financial Officer for the Retail Bank. Earlier, Devine spent time at McKinsey & Company, Inc. where he advised executive leadership of global companies on corporate and business strategy, as well as pricing and marketing strategy. He had earlier practiced as an attorney at Jones Day.

Devine graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude and a recipient of the Sears Prize, and from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science.

About David Tyrie:  As Preferred & Retail Products Executive for Bank of America, David Tyrie is responsible for delivering products, services and solutions to meet the financial needs of the bank’s 42 million U.S. consumer banking households.  He leads the product management group for the bank’s consumer deposits, debit and credit card, first mortgage, home equity, vehicle lending and GWIM banking businesses.  David also oversees Enterprise Payments Network capabilities, Preferred Rewards and Retirement and Life Services for Bank of America.

David most recently was Managing Director and Head of Retirement and Personal Wealth Solutions (RPWS) at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  In this role, he was responsible for institutional and personal retirement and preferred segment solutions across Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Merrill Edge and Bank of America.

Prior to joining Bank of America, David served as Managing Director, Global Products and Marketing for Putnam Investments. In this role, he was responsible for product management and marketing within Putnam’s Retirement Services business, including 401(k), Taft Hartley, IRA rollover, brokerage and investment only business lines. Prior to this role, David served as a Managing Director of Putnam’s Corporate Internet Strategy, responsible for the development and implementation of advanced product and service delivery and digital strategies.

Before joining Putnam in 1999, David served in various leadership roles at Fidelity Investments and MFS Investment Management. While at Fidelity, David was instrumental in pioneering the Fidelity.com business. Throughout his career he has worked closely with financial advisors to identify and address their clients’ individual retirement planning challenges.  

David resides in Boston with his wife and four children.

About John Owen:  John Owen, 54, is head of the Regional Banking Group, which includes the businesses that serve retail customers and small businesses, the Wealth Management Group, the branch network and its market leaders, and Corporate Marketing. He also serves as a member of the Executive Council for Regions, a top U.S. bank-holding company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with $118 billion in assets, operating approximately 1,700 banking offices in 16 states.

Owen joined Regions in 2007 as head of Operations and Technology, where he served until 2009, when he was named head of the company’s Consumer Services Group. Before being named to his current position as head of the Regional Banking Group in 2014, Owen served two years as head of Business Lines, which included the Business Services, Consumer Services, Consumer Lending, and Wealth Management groups. Prior to joining Regions, he served as chief executive officer of Assurant Specialty Property, a Fortune 500 company based in Atlanta, Georgia. Owen began his service at Assurant in 1998 as senior vice president of Information Technology. From 2003 until 2005 he held the position of chief operating officer of the Assurant Property and Solutions Group and was then promoted to chief executive officer.

Owen also served as senior vice president of Global Systems Development for Citicorp Credit Services and chief information officer of North American Operations for Arrow Electronics.  He began his career in 1983 in information systems with American Airlines and McDonnell-Douglas.

Owen holds a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management from Auburn University School of Engineering in Auburn, Alabama. He is a graduate of Leadership Alabama, a board member on

the Consumer Bankers Association, a member of the Financial Services Roundtable, and is actively involved as a foster parent for several children in Clanton, Alabama.
